Traditional and Computerized Diagnostics

Tension Analysis - Using computerized diagnostics to troubleshoot tuning stability and other issues

  1. I'm glad that I don't have a job dealing with computers, because I was reading an article the other day and I came across computerized diagnostics. And big words like that are pretty intimidating.

  2. It's not really all that bad, Tyler. Computers are a great tool that can do things sometimes better and faster than we can, we just have to understand their limitations.

In my case, my specialized iPad app can hear about 100 times more precisely than my ears can. From the top to the bottom of the piano, it can differentiate the pitch into 880,000 different parts. It is so sensitive that if I touch a string with my finger, I can see the pitch change on the display because of my body heat.

Although it is not physically possible to tune this accurate, it is good to have tools more precise than we can be. It is a powerful tool in diagnosing issues we are not able to perceive with our senses, such as, where and why a piano is not staying in tune.
